Every casino bonus comes with a wagering requirement, and it is the single number that decides whether the offer is worth anything to you. The headline amount is marketing; the wagering is the price.
A wagering requirement tells you how much you must bet before bonus money turns into money you can withdraw. A 35x requirement on a €100 bonus means you place €3,500 in bets first.
It does not mean you lose €3,500. You bet it, win some, lose some, and the casino's edge slowly eats into the balance as you go. The higher the multiple, the more of the bonus the house edge takes back before you are allowed to cash out.
This is where most players get caught. Listings write it as:
| Offer | Wagering | You must bet |
|---|---|---|
| 100% up to €100, deposit €100 | 35x (b) | €3,500 |
| 100% up to €100, deposit €100 | 35x (b+d) | €7,000 |
| 200% up to €200, deposit €100 | 20x (b+d) | €6,000 |
The 200% offer looks twice as generous and has a lower multiple, but it still asks for more betting than the first one. Always do the sum.
A rough way to see what wagering costs you: multiply the amount you must bet by the house edge of the games you will play.
On slots with 96% RTP (a 4% edge), betting €3,500 costs about €140 on average. On a €100 bonus that is more than the bonus itself, so on average you finish with nothing left of it. Betting €7,000 costs about €280.
Tip: a small bonus with low wagering often beats a big one with high wagering. A no-wagering cashback of 10% is real money; a 500% match at 50x rarely is.
